Getting laid off is trauma

Apr 25, 2024

Getting laid off is trauma.

Yes, I said it.

When there is a dramatic life event when change is sudden and unseen, it can have the same effect as:

Death
moving
becoming homeless

It's detrimental.

So you won't find any "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality here.

Often, after a layoff people need to have emotional security before they can even THINK about looking for a new job. There is also SAFETY that needs to be addressed. You need to examine where you are before you are emotionally before being able to handle parts of the job-searching process.

Remember to have space for yourself, and find the supports and safety you need before jumping back into panic job search mode.
